Seth Warren-Crow

Assistant Professor - Sound Design - Theatre & Dance

MFA Mills College California

Visiting Assistant Professor Seth Warren-Crow is a sound designer, composer, and percussionist. Previously the Musical Director for the Department of Dance at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Seth taught courses in sound design, music, and digital media and acted as the resident composer, sound designer, audio engineer, and supervisor of dance accompanists. There, he designed sound for numerous showcases of faculty choreography as well as productions of La Bohème (Milwaukee Ballet), A Wrinkle in Time (First Stage Children’s Theater), Love Stories (Ballet Quad Cities), and Three Other Sisters (Theatre Gigante), which toured Slovenia during the fall of 2012. He also collaborates with performance artist Heather Warren-Crow; as warren-crow+warren-crow, they have exhibited sound art at Diapason gallery in Brooklyn, Hungryman gallery in Chicago, Iron Gate Studios in Austin, and the Soundwalk Festival in Long Beach. In 2007, warrencrow+warrencrow were artists/researchers-in-residence at the International Center for the History of Electronic Games.

Challenging any clear distinction between music and noise, nature and artifice, Seth’s sound for live performance often combines field recordings, samples from film and other media, and voice to create intricate and uncanny electro-acoustic soundscapes. His research and teaching interests include sound design for theatre, dance, and site-specific performance art; radio drama and transmission art; jazz, electro-acoustic, and Indian Classical music; theories and practices of improvisation across the arts; digital technology and the performing arts; and intercultural performance. He received a MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in California, where he received the Frog Peak Award for Experimental Music.
