Sensing the World Around You

Most of today’s robots are autonomous and employ some degree of artificial intelligence. The Mars exploration rovers cannot wait for a command from Earth for every movement. The mission would last entirely too long, cost too much, and there are too many possible ways for the message to not be received. Adding sensors to a robot are the way to spice up the functions of the design and to allow for more complexity in programming and design challenges without the constant monitoring of a human programmer.

In this section, we will explore the four sensors included in the LEGO Mindstorms kits – touch, sound, ultrasonic and light. We will also explore the ranges and limits of each sensor through specific design challenges.
