New Deal T-STEM Academy Principal, Dr. Jerry Adams, Receives Regional, State Recognitions
December 17, 2011
Dr. Jerry Adams, Principal at New Deal High School T-STEM Academy, has been selected by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) as High School Principal of the Year for Region XVII. Along with other winners from twenty regions across the state, Adams will be recognized at the TASSP annual conference and awards banquet in June 2012.
Each of the regional winners was required to submit additional information in order to compete for the Texas State Principal of the Year Award. The extensive process included application; essay questions describing instructional leadership, collaborative partnerships, and examples of leading cultural change; four letters of recommendation from school superintendent, a fellow principal from another school district, a teacher, and a parent.
After review by the TASSP Principals Image Committee composed of eight Texas principals, Dr. Adams was one of three finalists selected to compete for the Texas Principal of the Year Award during an interview process in Austin on December 3, 2011. New Deal ISD represented the only T-STEM Academy.
Following the interview process, Adams responded, “I am very humbled by this recognition from my colleagues in Region XVII as the regional high school principal of the year and by the TASSP state level committee as a state finalist for high school principal of the year. This recognition reflects the professional commitment from the New Deal ISD leadership and the School Board and the dedication on the part of our teachers, students, parents, and community to foster an environment promoting college, career, and life readiness for our students. It's a great day to be a New Deal Lion!”
Trisha Williams, New Deal ISD District Counselor, cites Adams as instrumental in developing and implementing STEM programs throughout the school and in enhancing the lives of all its students. “Dr. Adams expects greatness from students and faculty alike, and we are anxious to deliver. His success-driven mentality is contagious. Everyone wants to do their best with him as our leader.”
Dr. Dean Fontenot, Senior Director of the Texas Tech T-STEM Center applauded efforts by Dr. Adams. “We are delighted – but certainly not surprised – that Dr. Adams has been chosen to receive Principal of the Year honors for Region XVII or selected as a finalist for the TASSP State Principal of the Year Award. His attitude of academic excellence for students and quality training opportunities for teachers at New Deal has produced a premier T-STEM Academy for West Texas and the entire state. The Texas Tech University T-STEM Center is extremely proud of what Dr. Adams and his teachers and students have accomplished, and we look forward to working with them to further their goals in STEM education, teacher professional development opportunities, and college and career readiness for New Deal students.”
