Presidio ISD Formula One Teams in Austin Competition

April 21, 2014

On April 5th, 2014 two teams from Presidio High School and William Soza Early College High School travelled to Austin to compete in the Formula One Competition. The students had a great learning experience and represented Presidio very well in different components of the competition that includes engineering design, pit display & portfolio, verbal presentation and the actual car racing. El Diablo Azul and Desert Inferno raced teams from Austin ISD and Granbury ISD.

Members of each team are all Mr. Rolando Gloria's Engineering students in Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) and Principles of Engineering (POE). Miss Guadalupe Singh, one of the administrators at PISD relayed the information to Mr. Gloria about the competition, which was a good project for integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The team was created and specific role was assigned to each member of both teams, Mr. Phillip Aguilar jumped in to be the co-sponsor of Mr. Rolando Gloria.

Desert Inferno Team

Both Teams prepared their car design using Inventor Software and created parts like wheels, axle rods and spacers in Inventor too. An exploded design of their car was included in their portfolio and pit display so as the result of testing and analysis on velocity, drag and surface pressure using the wind tunnel application, Flow design software. Mr. Fred Schneider, a professor from Texas Tech University helped both teams with the CAD and CAM applications and Dr. John Chandler gave pointers on making their portfolio and pit display.

El Diablo Azul Team

This is the first time Presidio ISD joined the competition, there were problems and hindrances encountered along the way. The CNC router they have in Presidio High School is not updated and the license was expired but because of the alliances and partnership they established with the Akins HS in Austin ISD, they willingly helped both teams to mill the cars. Big thanks to Talon Racing Team and Mr. Juan Gonzalez, principal of STEM Academy, Akins HS.

El Diablo Azul team placed third and will advanced to nationals which will be held at the Michigan Speedway on May 16 and 17, 2014.
