Science: It’s a Girl Thing (SIGT)

  • As part of the outreach for her National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, Professor Simon coordinates a session for the SIGT summer program for junior high girls. The SIGT program is organized by the Institute for the Development and Enrichment of Advanced Learners (IDEAL) at Texas Tech.
  • The "Plastics" SIGT session also involves Professors McKenna, Hedden, Khare, Vanapalli and graduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
  • Activities include making slime and nylon, comparing density of plastics and other materials, examining the viscoelastic and mechanical properties of polymers, and making diffusion measurements.

Super Saturdays

The Super Saturdays program is organized by the Institute For the Development and Enrichment of Advanced Learners (IDEAL) at Texas Tech.
  • Session Titles: "The Physics of Goop and Glue" and "Science of Silly Putty and Slime". Activities are similar but more basic than those for the SIGT program.
  • The Super Saturdays sessions also involves Professors McKenna and Khare and graduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
