What do you know about forensic science? The history of forensic science goes back to thousands of years (approximately 44 BC). Join us for this webinar when we discuss ballistics and blood spatter evidence. Two outstanding experts in these fields will be on hand to tell us a little about themselves and about the real world crime scenes they have investigated. Learn what they do on a daily basis and how they have assisted in solving crimes. See how television CSI compares to real life!

Wind Science & Engineering Webinar (January 24th)
Have you ever wondered why and how people become “storm chasers?” What types of equipment are used to help storm chasers with tracking storms and tornadoes? What about all the windmills that are now providing energy to the United States? Do they really generate enough energy to be cost effective? Are they the answer to our power problems for future generations? Did you know that Texas Tech’s wind center has been the leader for study and research on the destructive forces of wind? Join us for our next Webinar as we take a look at not only storm chasers and what is involved with that activity, but also as we look at how the Wind Science and Engineering (WiSE) Research Center at Texas Tech was established. We hope you join us for an interesting look into this area!

Nuclear Medicine Webinar (December 8th)
Did you know that an estimated 18 million nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed each year in the United States? Do you know what types of nuclear medicine tests are currently available and are common practice? What is a nuclear medical technician? What is the job outlook for nuclear medical technologists for the next several years? Please join us for our Webinar on Nuclear Medicine where we will dive into the medical field of study and how it pertains to the fields of math, science, and technology.

Actuarial Science Webinar (November 15th)
Do you know what an actuary is? Have you ever wondered why males under 25 pay more for car insurance than females under 25? In this webinar, we will take a look at how actuarial science assesses financial risks in the insurance and financial fields using mathematical and statistical methods. Actuaries are the leading professionals in finding ways to manage risk. We will explore more into this area and even look at a longevity test. Our guest speaker will talk to us about how actuarial science affects the insurance field, in particular. We hope you join us!

Pyrotechnics — Fireworks & Explosives Webinar (October 18th)
Did you know that Pyrotechnics is the science of using materials capable of undergoing self-contained and self-sustained chemical reactions for the production of heat, light, gas, smoke and/or sound? The entertainment industry as well as many musical groups use pyrotechnics to enhance their live shows. We will take a look at a wide array of areas that pyrotechnics and commercial fireworks are used and what type of educational background is needed for this field of study. Our guest speaker from the Texas Tech Chemical Engineering Department will talk to us about how “chemical engineering” is tied to this particular area of expertise. We hope you join us!

Forensic Ornithology Webinar (Sept. 26th)
Did you know that forensic ornithology is defined as the field of study that identifies bird species involved in accidents, crimes, and the like from scraps of tissue or feathers? Join us to explore items such as…..Are bird strikes really a problem to airlines? What kind of information does the Smithsonian and FAA collect on bird strikes? Our guest speaker, Dr. Carla Dove (Program Manager at Smithsonian Institution), will join us for this webinar to give some insight on this newly developing field within Ornithology and the important application of this research toward the field of aviation safety. We hope that you join us!
Welcome to the TTUISD Math and Science Club!
Posted June 8, 2011 at 3:13 pm in News
Everything we do is somehow touched by science, math, or technology. In many cases, all three subjects intersect and affect our daily lives. The TTUISD Math and Science club is a society of students, teachers, and professionals interested in exploring known and unique career paths in science, mathematics, and technology. We hope to foster an online community that promotes social interaction not only between students, but also with online presenters.
Each month the Math and Science Club will bring an interesting and unique career to the attention of our members through webinars. Members will have the ability to ask questions of the presenter and then to do further research into that specific career or topic that might be of interest. We look forward to delivering some unique presentations that will peak your curiosity into the fields of science, math, or technology!
Why Join
- Expand your knowledge.
- Explore possible career paths.
- Become more aware of your surroundings.
