April 30, 2009
On April 1, the Texas Tech University Independent School District, a unit within the College of Outreach and Distance Education at Texas Tech University, announced that Ethel Russell will serve as the new high school principal. Russell has been a TTUISD counselor since December 2007.
Established by the State Board of Education in 1993, TTUISD is an accredited elementary, middle and high school diploma program that operates entirely at a distance. In 2007-08 TTUISD averaged 1,419 full-time students throughout the year. A total of 1,377 students have graduated from the program.
She said she is excited about the new challenge and that the transition to high school principal has been wonderful.
After moving from her hometown of Gary, Ind. to West Lafayette, Ind., Russell graduated from Purdue University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, specialization in Special Education. She went on to Angelo State University to complete her master's degrees. One is in guidance and counseling and the other is in mid-management.
Before her move to Lubbock, Russell served as the Assistant Principal for the San Angelo Independent School District for five years and the Interim Principal for one year. She was married to her late husband, Eric, for 20 years and has two children, Eric Jr. and Erica. Eric, 24, works full-time for Alltel in San Angelo and Erica, 20, is finishing her sophomore year at Texas Tech.
Russell said she and her Yorkshire Terrier, Coco Chanel are really enjoying Lubbock. She enjoys reading, cooking and listening to Gospel music in her free time. She is also a member of Community Baptist Church in Lubbock where she serves as the Activities Coordinator for their Outreach Ministry, also called Parent's Night Out.
"I’m excited about working with our non-traditional students and helping meet their needs in any way I can," Russell said. "I'm really looking forward to this new opportunity."
