Summer 2016 Camp Director Information
Training Required for Employees of Summer Camps and On-Campus Programs for Minors
Senate Bill 1414, now Section 51.976 of the Texas Education Code , which was passed by the Texas Legislature in 2011, requires all employees having contact with minor children attending a camp or activity on a college/university campus to be trained and certified on strategies and techniques for prevention of sexual abuse and child molestation. The required training addresses the warning signs and prevention of child abuse and how to ensure that camp employees know how and to whom they can report any such abuse. Texas Tech has adopted OP 10.19, "Sexual Abuse/Child Molestation Prevention Training for Camps and On-Campus Programs for Minors" , which implements the requirements of S.B. 1414 for Directors and employees of summer camps and on-campus programs owned and operated by Texas Tech University.
State law and the TTU OP require training every two years so, if your summer camp employees received training in 2014, they must attend training and be certified this year.
The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education is tasked with making the required training available to Texas Tech employees, as well as reporting such training and certification to the Texas Department of State Health Services in a timely manner. Please fill out the Summer Camp Application form to notify the Vice Provost of your summer camp/on-campus program for minors.
The Office of the Vice Provost and the Texas Tech Human Resources Department have scheduled live training sessions with a DSHS-certified trainer. Live trainings will be offered on campus on the following dates:
|Wednesday, March 30, 5:00 p.m.||Mass Communication Bldg., Room 359|
|Tuesday, April 5, Noon||Education Bldg., Room 001 (Basement)|
|Monday, May 2, 4:00 p.m.||Education Bldg., Room 001 (Basement)|
|Thursday, May 5, 2:00 p.m.||Education Bldg., Room 001 (Basement)|
|Saturday, May 21, 10:00 a.m.||SUB Escondido Theater|
Texas Tech summer camp and on-campus program employees can Log into SumTotal (http://webapps.tosm.ttu.edu/itts/sumtotalsystems) using their eRaider Username and Password. Under the heading "Catalog", go to "Compliance Training - Sexual Abuse/Child Molestation Prevention Training.” From there they can choose between the five dates to attend. If you do not have all of your camp/on-campus program personnel hired at this point, please do so as soon as possible so they can register for a training. [NOTE - Please contact Human Resources Systems at 806-742-3851 if you have technical difficulties with the SumTotal site.]
Due to budgetary constraints, online training for summer camp employees is not currently available. Therefore, you need to make sure your employees attend one of the live trainings offered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
If you have any questions about these training requirements or the training being offered to Texas Tech employees, please contact Paul Ruiz at 834-5415.
