Debris Impact Facility Gains A2LA Accreditation

The National Wind Institute’s Debris Impact Facility received ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation.

The association awarded the accreditation based on the facility’s quality management system, test methods, equipment and competence. The Debris Impact Facility uses a cannon capable of producing wind speeds greater than 250 mph to test and develop building materials capable of withstanding extreme weather.

Whitacre College of Engineering’s Receives High Rankings

Business Insider and Best Value Colleges ranked the Whitacre College of Engineering among the top programs in the nation.

Business Insider ranked the college among the top 20 engineering programs in the nation and eighth among programs at public universities based on a review of PayScale’s College Salary Report. The report evaluates the earnings of graduates who have earned bachelors degrees within the last 10 yeas.

Best Value Colleges named the Whitacre College of Engineering one of the best programs for bachelor’s degrees in engineering. The publication gave the award based on Texas Tech’s low tuition rates and return on investment for graduates. The college’s large petroleum engineering program and wind energy research also contributed to the ranking.

Professor Named Fellow by the Society of Automotive Engineers

James Yang, an associate professor, associate chairman and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers International.  The award, which is the highest grade of membership for the society, recognizes members who have made significant contributions to mobility technology.

Yang uses physics-based models to design and build ergonomic solutions for vehicles and workplaces. He also serves as an editor for more than seven professional publications and has received faculty awards for research and teaching.

Texas Tech Researchers Part of Award-Winning Team

Three Texas Tech researchers are part of an international team that will share a $3 million reward for detecting gravitational waves for the first time.

Professor Benjamin Owen, assistant professor Alessandra Corsi, and postdoctoral researchers Santiago Caride, Robert Coyne and Ra Inta participated in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) Scientific Collaboration. In 2015, LIGO detected gravitational waves, a key component of Einstein’s theory of relativity, for the first time.
