Texas Tech University
Scholarly Messenger
Beginning of a New Era
By M. Duane Nellis

When presented the opportunity to serve Texas Tech University as president, the decision process was bittersweet. On one hand, I was president of an institution at the University of Idaho that had made great strides in the areas of research and creative scholarship. I was very proud of what we'd accomplished to that point and what the future held. On the other hand, Texas Tech University's reputation as a national emerging research university and the efforts undertaken to receive research dollars from the National Research University Fund (NRUF) in the state of Texas spoke volumes to the university's commitment to a high level of scholarly endeavor.

Obviously, I made a great decision. I am thrilled to be your president and help continue to lead Texas Tech to new levels of academic achievement. With your support and leadership and my commitment to ensuring you have the facilities, resources and tools necessary to effectively engage in research and scholarly pursuits at the highest level, we will achieve our goals and build on our robust and active academic environment.

I am looking forward to working with each of you, learning about your research endeavors and offering my support. Together, we can, and will, foster a healthy environment for your research initiatives and promote a vibrant learning environment for our students.
