TTU Professor Joins Team of Judges to Take on Comic Industry Awards
Pow! Blam! Whack! Texas Tech Journalism and Electronic Media Department Chair Robert Peaslee is a hit in the comic universe, being chosen as one of six judges to serve on the 2017 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards judging panel.
In what is considered the "Oscars" of the comic book industry, the Will Eisner Awards are handed out each year in a gala ceremony at Comic-Con International San Diego. The award's namesake comes from renowned cartoonist Will Eisner, who created "The Spirit" and is considered the pioneer of graphic novels. The Awards cover more than two-dozen categories, each showcasing the best publications and creators of the previous year.
When asked how he felt about his nomination, Peaslee exuded nothing short of excitement and gratitude.
"I was invited to participate in October 2016, and my initial feeling was complete surprise. While I have been active in comics, one always feels that one's own knowledge is quite limited in comparison to that of others. That was and is certainly my default assumption: that I still have a lot to learn. And I do. I'm already learning a ton working with the other judges and reading the work for this year's nominations," Peaslee said.
Come April, Peaslee will gather with fellow judges Alan Campbell, Rob Clough, Jamie Newbold, Dawn Rutherford and Martha Thomases for three days in San Diego for deliberation on the nominees. Once a consensus is reached, ballots will be dispatched to the voting population before the awards show slated to be held in July.
