The Accident

A Jan. 7, 2010, accident in a laboratory in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry left a graduate student seriously injured. The student was working with energetic materials in greater quantities than was prudent. He also was working outside of a hood and without a blast shield and personal protective wear. More »

CSB Releases Video

The CSB released its video "Experimenting with Danger" Oct. 20, 2011. The video details hazards associated with conducting research at chemical laboratories in academic institutions. Watch »

TTU's Ongoing Response to the Accident

Texas Tech conducted an internal investigation into the Jan. 7, 2010, accident and found that more than 20 internal protocols and procedures had been violated. Since the accident many changes have taken place including the formation of a new chemical safety committee; moving Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) into the Office of Research & Innovation; and adding EHS laboratory inspectors.
