Institutional Review Board
Protection of Human Subjects Committee
Charge:
The Protection of Human Subjects Committee serves as the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Texas Tech University and reviews all proposals for human research carried out at Texas Tech University. The mission of the IRB is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects who participate in research involving Texas Tech University personnel, resources, and/or facilities. The IRB is directed by federal regulations (45 CFR 46 http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/humansubjects/guidance/45cfr46.htm) and policies of the Department of Health and Human Services. It is guided by the principles of The Belmont Report (http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/belmontArchive.html) which include respect for persons, beneficence and justice. Each proposal for human research is reviewed by one or more IRB reviewers.
Membership:
- Senior Associate Vice President for Research
- Director of Environmental Health and Safety
- One representative from the Office of the Provost
- Assistant Vice President for Information Technology
- Three members of the Lubbock community
- Nine faculty members from Texas Tech University
- Two faculty members from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine
- One faculty member from the School of Law
Appointment:
Members of the Committee, other than those specified by the virtue of position, will be appointed by the Vice President for Research. Each will serve a three-year term except when shorter terms may be required to maintain balanced membership and continuity of Committee operations.
Operating Procedures:
The Committee will develop its own operating procedures subject to the approval of the Vice President for Research, to whom the Committee will report.
Chairperson:
The chairperson of the Committee shall be appointed by the Vice President for Research.
Meeting Times:
Meetings convene on the last Tuesday of every month at 3:00 p.m.
