Scientific Revolution Essay Contest

The Institute for the Study of Western Civilization is sponsoring an essay competition for Texas Tech undergraduates whose winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship. To win this scholarship, a student must attend the lecture about the Scientific Revolution, entitled “Who Cares About the Scientific Revolution?” that will be delivered by Professor Peter Dear of Cornell University at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018 in Room 169 of Human Sciences building. In the essay, the student must describe the ideas developed in Professor Dear's lecture, and provide his or her own thoughts as to why The Scientific Revolution should continue to be of interest to people today. Persuasiveness, imagination, prose quality, and independent research into the nature of The Scientific Revolution will all be factors in the grading of submitted essays. Second and third place prizes consisting of scholarships of $250 and $200 may also be awarded for sufficiently meritorious essays.   

Qualifications:
 
  • Essays must be roughly 2,000 words in length.
  •  Students must attend Professor Dear's lecture and include their name and contact information on the available sign in sheet in order to participate. 
  • The deadline for essay submissions is March 1, 2018.  
  • Winners will be announced by April 1, 2018. 
  • Essays should be submitted to Dr. Stephen H. Balch, Director of the Institute for the Study of Western Civilization, at steve.balch@ttu.edu.
