Curriculum

The Wind Science and Engineering (WISE) doctoral degree program meets the requirements of the Texas Tech University Graduate School. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the WISE degree, it is not necessary to declare a minor; however, an area of emphasis with 18 semester hours of coursework is required. This requirement can be fulfilled with a Master's degree.

The doctorate requires at least 60 semester hours of graduate studies in addition to a dissertation (requirement of the Graduate School of Texas Tech University). These 60 hours include core courses, field of emphasis courses, and internship. The key to the coursework in the new degree program is 6 core courses (18 semester hours) that will include courses in wind engineering, wind sciences, economics, ethics, and mathematics. Along with area of emphasis courses and internship, six additional courses (18 semester hours) related to the student’s dissertation research are required.

The coursework in the first year is designed to give a broad background to students. It is a rigorous year for students and it should break the mold of single-discipline thinking. All of the core courses will be completed by the students by the end of the first year.
