Healthy Relationship Workshop Series: Begins September 28, 2009

The Student Counseling Center (SCC) is offering classes that can help you improve the quality of your relationships. This is NOT therapy, but rather an opportunity to learn some skills that will help you communicate better, feel more secure, and avoid mistakes in your relationships.

The Healthy Relationships Workshop is open to all students, faculty and staff. There are four classes in the series, and you can come to as many as you like at any point in the series. The classes are designed to stimulate discussion and give experiences to help you in your relationships. The class will be on MONDAYS from 12:00pm – 12:45pm in the STUDENT WELLNESS CENTER, Room 100. The below “syllabus” describes the dates of the class and different topics for each.

  • 28 September 2009: “Smart Dating: Starting Off on the Right Foot” (Erin Snyder, Ph.D.) SWC – Rm. 100
Dating in college can be really exciting, but it does present some challenges. This interactive presentation will help participants gain a better idea about what a healthy dating relationship looks like as well as identify dating “red flags” from the start.
  • 5 October 2009: “How to Manage Conflict in a Relationship” (Klint Hobbs, Ph.D.) SWC – Rm. 100
This workshop focuses specifically on the stages that partners go through in relationships. Common pitfalls to healthy communication are identified for each stage, and participants are coached on how to resolve problems in a mutually satisfying way. Participants’ conflict styles will be identified and discussed as well, and participants will learn to work through conflict and grow closer to their partners.
  • 12 October 2009: “Making Relationships Work in School” (Klint Hobbs, Ph.D.) SWC – ROOM 100
There are a number of unique challenges to staying in a relationship and managing school at the same time. This workshop addresses problems that occur when one or both partners are students. Time, money, communication, and distance are all potential barriers to relationships that can seem worse with the added pressure that school brings. Participants will learn how to prepare for and work through these issues.
  • 19 October 2009: Creeper Alert: Relationship Deal Breakers” (Erin Snyder, Ph.D.) SWC – Rm. 100
What’s healthy in a relationship? What’s not? This presentation will help participants figure out when “enough really is enough.”
