calkins Laura Calkins, PhD


Dr Calkins holds an undergraduate degree from The Honors College and James Madison College at Michigan State University in the fields of International Relations and Asian Studies. A winner of the prestigious traditional Fulbright scholarship to the United Kingdom, she earned a Master of Science degree in International Relations/Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Dr Calkins continued her studies at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, earning an MA in Far Eastern History and a doctorate in the Modern International History of Asia.

Dr Calkins has held positions as a Foreign Service Intern, a National Science Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, an Assistant Professor of Asian History, as an Assistant Research Scientist, and as an Oral Historian and Archivist. She was also an Aide to the Provost at the University of Michigan where her research supported the University's successful litigation effort to defend affirmative action in college admissions before the US Supreme Court, in the 2003 landmark case Gratz v. The Regents of the University of Michigan. She is currently the Director of the Women's Studies Program and on the faculty of the Honors College.
