V-Day Lubbock Coalition 2010

vday city of joy

V-Day Lubbock Coalition (Facebook link) is a Texas Tech Univesity Student Organization aimed at promoting an awareness campaign to end violence against women & girls. For more information email vdaylubbock@gmail.com.

A Silent Auction will take place during each of the 3 performances of The Vagina Monologues: March 6, March 27, & April 3. All of the proceeds will go directly to purchasing supplies for the women of the City of Joy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These women have all been victims of rape, genital mutilation and abuse. They have fled to the City of Joy where they can receive counseling and skills training, as well as learn how to become advocates for other women in their villages.

All Artwork is welcomed and greatly appreciated and all donors will receive free tickets to a performance of The Vagina Monologues. If you are interested in helping with this project, please send an email and we will be glad to pick up your donations. Click here for more details.

Fall 2010
  • "The Greatest Silence" Film Viewing/Discussion & "Dear Hillary" campaign
Violence against women in conflict has been called one of history's greatest silences. This documentary, filmed in the war zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo over several months in 2006 and 2007, breaks the silence that has surrounded the tens of thousands of women and girls who have been kidnapped, raped, sexually enslaved and tortured in that country's intractable civil war.

This is an amazing film that offers us great insight into our V-Day national spotlight area, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

After the film we will discuss what is happening to women in conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and everyone will have a chance to sign a postcard to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, asking her to fulfill her promise to enfource Public Law 109-456 which will provide peace and security for women in the Congo. If you would like to learn more about the Congo or are interested in the work that V-Day Coalition does, please come join us. This event is free and open to the public.

October 25, Monday | TTU Student Union Building (Soapsuds Room) | 7:00 p.m.
Spring 2011
  • The Vagina Monologues (TBA)
Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twelve years, the Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.

  • V-Men Workshop (A "Men Only" Event!) TBA
-What did we learn from our fathers about manhood and masculinity?
-What does it mean to be strong?
-How does aggression play a part in sexuality?
-Do you feel guilt or shame for being a man?

This workshop is about gathering input and experiences of men. Not only will it begin a much needed dialogue between men about violence against women, but it will also be for the development of a new performance piece entitle "10 Ways to Be a Man." This is a videotaped event and all information gathered will be sent to the national V-Day organization.
