CASNR's Hudson highlights Feb. 3 water conservation field day
The director of Texas Tech University's Cotton Economics Research Institute is heading up the list of speakers at the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation's 'Pioneers in Agriculture Field Day,' set for Feb. 3 at the Floyd County Unity Center in Muncy.
Darren Hudson, Tech's Larry Combest Endowed Chair in Agricultural Competitiveness Professor has been confirmed as the keynote speaker at this year's event. "This field day is an opportunity to see the latest research, and learn of new energy and water saving technologies," said Rick Kellison, Texas Alliance for Water Conservation Project Director.
Program topics on tap include:
"Livestock management and the Conservation Reserve Program
"New resources for irrigation scheduling and resource management
"Production decision and profitability management recommendations for 2010
"Updates on the proposed cap and trade and the NRCS Conservation Stewardship Program
Other Tech College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources faculty members on the agenda are David Doerfert, a professor with the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications, and Michael Farmer, an associate professor with the Department of Natural Resources Management.
The Texas Alliance for Water Conservation is a partnership of Floyd and Hale county producers, data collection technologies, and collaborating partners that include individual industries, universities, and government agencies. It was made possible through a grant from the Texas Water Development Board.
The project utilizes:
"On-farm demonstration sites, including cropping and livestock systems, to identify
the various production practices.
"Technologies and systems that help maintain individual farm profitability while improving
water usage efficiency.
"One of the main goals of this project is to extend the life of the Ogallala Aquifer,
while maintaining the viability of local farms and communities.
