COWamongus tops at Lubbock Mardi Gras fundraiser
Lubbock's Mardi Gras revelers took a moment out of Tuesday's (Feb. 23) annual celebration to award Texas Tech's COWamongus! Creamery and Meat Co. first place honors for having the best food booth at the city's sprawling Civic Center Exhibit Hall.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels had lined up three dozen area restaurants to provide food samples for supporters who attend its Mardi Gras fundraiser. Meals on Wheels currently delivers more than 550 meals a day, and maintains a network of 1,200 volunteers.
According to Lorrie Lushnat Bellair, executive director of Meals on Wheels, the Mardi Gras program is Lubbock Meals on Wheels' largest fundraiser of the year. Along with food booths, the Mardi Gras festivities included spectacular balloon arrangements and live music provided by a Dixieland band.
COWamongus! Creamery and Meat Company was created in 2005 with the support of Texas Tech alumnus Daniel Brackeen, owner of Heritage Family Specialty Foods and creator of the TCBY yogurt chains. Brackeen set up a partnership between Texas Tech and his company, allowing the university no cost access to his company's equipment, technology and materials in order to develop homemade products.
The campus-based business offers a variety of flavors of homemade ice cream, sorbet and frozen custard. The sweet treats are made in the fruits and dairy lab just down the hall in Tech's Animal and Food Sciences building. Manager Kelly Adams said there's also a retail store where customers can buy meat and dairy products processed by the Animal and Food Sciences Department. The deli serves signature sandwiches, soups, salads, wraps and quesadillas.
