Poster Power; Navarrete takes top spot at Regional SACNAS
A graduate student from Texas Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management edged into first place at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science's Southwestern Regional Conference recently, taking the top spot with a student research poster focusing on wind farms and wintering sandhill cranes on the South Plains.
California-native Laura Navarrete, a master's degree candidate studying wildlife science, also won first place honors in Texas Tech's Agriculture and Natural Resources Graduate Student Poster presentations late last month. She joined the department last year. Her bachelor's degree in wildlife, fisheries and conservation biology is from the University of California-Davis.
Some 75 students and faculty members from regional colleges and universities presented research and attended workshops at the SACNAS event, which was held at Lubbock's Science Spectrum and Texas Tech's Student Union Building.
This is the first year for Texas Tech to host a regional SACNAS meeting. Attendees presented their research in a poster presentation format, while workshops were geared toward professional development. Graduate school preparation was also available.
Officials said that the national society of scientists has a 36-year history of dedication to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists "" from college students to professionals "" in attaining advanced degrees, careers and positions of leadership.
The society claims that it has more than 20,000 members, partners and affiliates from various disciplines, institutions and ethnic backgrounds. Officials said the "organization and its members are committed to encouraging minority students and scientists to advance to their utmost capability."
