The Beltway: Congressional interns wind up spring sessions
Five fortunate students from Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will soon wrap up their terms as government interns in Washington, D.C. Since its establishment in 1998, the popular CASNR Government Internship Program has provided the opportunity for almost 70 students to serve in Washington and Austin.
"This program offers CASNR students a unique opportunity to experience our government in action," said Lori Dudley, coordinator of student development in the college's Student Services Center. "Just as important, internship experiences often lead to jobs for many of the program's alumni, as well."
The roster of CASNR 2010 Spring interns includes:"Laramie Adams, a senior agriculture communications major from Gustine: Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas)"Jennifer Blackburn, a senior agriculture communications major from Broadview, N.M.: House Committee on Agriculture"Zach Gilbert, a senior agriculture and applied economics major from Sweetwater: Congressman Kevin Brady (R-Texas)"Madelon Osborne, a junior agriculture communications major from Menard: Congressman Mike Conaway (R-Texas)"Shelby Stokes, a senior agribusiness major from Afton: Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-Texas)
Blackburn called her experience both remarkable and surreal. "Simply seeing government in action first-hand enabled me to learn more than I could have imagined about the legislative process." Osborne added, "I feel that this internship gave me insight on what I would like to focus on as I continue working on my degree at Tech."
Stokes said she cherished the experiences gained while in Washington. "I've truly come to understand how our government operates," she said. "Working on the Hill has been an experience in itself; the atmosphere is contagious and even addicting."
CASNR officials note that donations from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Texas Corn Producers Board originally helped establish the program. In recent years, other organizations have made significant contributions, as well, to include the Plains Cotton Growers, Texas Corn Growers, Texas Peanut Producers, Texas Wheat Producers, Dan Taylor, Texas Farm Bureau, South Texas Cotton and Grain and others.
