Commencement speaker for the morning program was Royal Furgeson, a senior U. S. district judge for the northern district of Texas. Furgeson told the graduates that he found inspiration in the anthem, "America the Beautiful."
He noted that the song's phrase "" 'Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law' "" serves as a reminder for the new graduates to be responsible citizens as they enter society as college-educated workers and leaders. He urged them to lead "a life we choose, not a life others may choose for us."
Awards for Furgeson include the Standing Ovation Award from the State Bar of Texas (2009), Texas Tech School of Law - West Texas Legal Legend (2008), and Texas Tech Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni (2007). He received his bachelor's and law degrees from Texas Tech.
