Learning Experience: NSR internships go to CASNR standouts
Research, persistence and networking helped land two CASNR students highly-sought internships this summer with the National Swine Registry, one of the nation's leading swine breed organizations. Texas Tech's Kirby Carpenter and Josh Flohr were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants, officials with the West Lafayette, Ind.-based group said today (May 5).
Carpenter, a junior agricultural communications major from Kiowa, Colo., will be working as a communications intern where she'll focus on writing and design for the livestock show industry. She's a member of Tech's nationally-recognized livestock judging team.
Flohr, a senior animal science major from Emmitsburg, Md., will serve as the organization's fieldman intern. A member of Tech's livestock judging team, too, Flohr has extensive experience in purebred swine production.
The National Swine Registry formed in 1994 with the consolidation of the American Yorkshire Club, Hampshire Swine Registry and United Duroc Swine Registry. The American Landrace Association joined a few years later. The group's services include litter registrations, performance pedigrees, breed promotion and marketing assistance.
The four breeds make a significant contribution to the overall profitability of the swine industry, officials claim. Hampshires, Landrace, Durocs and Yorkshires represent 87 percent of the total purebred hog population in the United States.
