Noted ecologist selected as latest NRM Outstanding Alum
A nationally-recognized ecologist, researcher and academic leader from Fort Collins, Colo., has been presented the Texas Tech University Department of Natural Resources Management 2009 Outstanding Alumnus Award. Terry McLendon received his undergraduate and doctorate degrees from Texas Tech in the 1970s.
"Terry's enormous success shows that range science and management produces people who can make incredible contributions," said Philip Gipson, chairman of Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management. "Our department is proud to have such an accomplished graduate."
A reception for McLendon was held on Tuesday (May 11) in the Natural Resources Management Building. Later that day he presented a seminar entitled "Vegetation change, precipitation patterns, and groundwater use: Projecting impacts to vegetation and water supply" at the Goddard Building.
McLendon has more than three decades of research and consulting experience in the United States, Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico, and Peru in plant ecology, restoration of disturbed lands, ecological modeling, ecological risk assessment, range and land management, vegetation sampling, watershed dynamics and statistical ecology. During his career he created and co-developed what's known as the Ecological Dynamics Simulation Model, a computer model that's been applied at 35 locations in the United States, Australia and Indonesia.
Separately, he has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific and technical publications, and has been a faculty member at three universities, including the University of Texas at El Paso, Colorado State University and Texas A&I University. He also worked as a principal scientist at MWH Americas and KS2 Ecological Field Services, in addition to serving as a vice president at Shepherd Miller Inc.
In addition to his bachelor's degree in range management and doctorate in range science from Texas Tech, McLendon earned his master's degree in range science from Colorado State University.
