The Texas Tech New Deal farm consists of over 980 acres and has multiple research programs within Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences and the Department of Plant and Soil Science. Some of these programs within the Department of Animal Science include a 1,000 head research feedlot facility for studying the finishing of cattle and ruminant animal nutrition.
In addition, the facility has:" An indoor and outdoor swine research program and swine farrowing facility for the study of pigs" A metabolism center for the detailed study of animal nutrition of various feed sources passing through the animal." A beef center for the study of cow/calf and bull research." A sheep and goat facility for both research and education.
In addition, there are field research studies, including pivot irrigation of perennial grasses and drip irrigation studies for both grain and forage sorghum for animal grazing. The research farm is located on FM 1729, about 6 miles east of the town of New Deal, and a 20-minute drive from the Texas Tech campus. The farm has an elevation is 3,262 feet, and an average annual rainfall is 18.6 inches.
The New Deal facility is used for both research and education. Various classroom laboratories are held at the farm by both departments, and the facility is visited regularly by producers, school children, other researchers, students and international visitors and tour groups from all over the world.
