Barrel racers lead Texas Tech rodeo teams to strong showing at Sul Ross State
Led by a strong riding in the barrel racing events, Texas Tech's women's rodeo team rolled to a third place finish over the weekend at the Sul Ross State University rodeo in Alpine. Held at the Turner Range Animal Science Center's S.A.L.E. Arena, the meeting was the Red Raiders second Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event of the season.
In barrel racing Taylor Langdon, a sophomore from Aubrey, finished in sixth place in go round one, third in the finals, and second in the overall competition. The animal and food science major now leads the Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association in barrel racing rankings.
Meanwhile, in other barrel racing action Haley Nelson of Canyon placed third out of 135 barrel racers in go round one, fifth in the finals and, ultimately, tied for fourth in the overall event. Teammate Kirsten Stubbs, a sophomore agriculture business major from Eldorado, took fifth in go round one, seventh in finals and sixth overall.
Teal Hampton, a senior human studies major from Ft. Myers, Fla., placed fourth in go round one and finished in barrel racing's top ten. Bailey Guthrie, a sophomore animal science major Rigby, Idaho, took sixth in go round one of goat tying, third in the finals and third overall. Guthrie also finished seventh in breakaway calf roping.
Meanwhile, in the men's competition, Luke Creasy, a senior English major from Alberta, Canada, finished third in go round one, sixth
in the finals and fourth overall in bareback bronc riding. In other action,
"Brody Self of Stephenville and Cody Owens of McAllen placed sixth in go round one and finished sixth in the team roping
"C.J. Kerr of Paradise took eighth place in the steer wrestling, sixth the finals and tied for
fourth place overall
"Adam Sawyer of Bassett, Neb. placed eighth in steer wrestling
Tech's rodeo teams next travel Oct. 7-9 to the next National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event at Vernon College, followed by another competition Oct. 14-16 at West Texas A&M in Canyon. Tech's fall season winds down on Oct. 21-23 at the university's equestrian center indoor arena.
