CASNR hosts Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo officials at Merket luncheon
More than 120 Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources students, faculty and guests took a moment to thank and express their appreciation to 17 representatives from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at a special scholarship luncheon on Oct. 25 at the university's Merket Alumni Center.
"Benefitting youth and supporting education is what drives the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo," said Skip Wagner, president of the show.
Currently, more than 2,000 students from across the state are on show scholarships. The value of these scholarships is approximately $30 million. Included in that number are 158 Texas Tech students, including 62 students from the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources.
"Their generous donation helps me in accomplishing my goals and dreams," said Linnsey Sheldon, a senior agricultural and applied economics major from Shallowater. Rustin Williams, a senior animal science major from Baird, added, "I realize that times are difficult, and that just adds to my level of appreciation."
Additionally, Texas Tech has 100 students on Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo endowed scholarships and six graduate assistantships. Since the scholarship program's inception in 1957, 749 rodeo scholars have attended Texas Tech with direct rodeo scholarships valued at more than $7.3 million.
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials stressed that educational program is a significant part of the show's mission "" benefiting youth, supporting education, and facilitating better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation.
The Houston-based organization has supported Texas students and universities since 1957. Beginning with just one scholarship, the program has expanded to more than $152 million in direct educational program support.
