On Track: CASNR sets new enrollment record, doctoral students on the rise
Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources reached a benchmark in student enrollment with a record number of students signed up for classes in the fall semester, university officials report. Final enrollment stood at 1,785, up 5.6 percent from last fall's 1,685.
"It's a very positive sign," said John Burns, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
The numbers for individual departments were:" Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics: 338 (Grad: 45/Undergrad: 293)" Department of Agricultural Education & Communications: 300 (Grad: 59/Undergrad: 241)" Animal & Food Sciences: 464 (Grad: 67/Undergrad: 397)" Department of Landscape Architecture: 146 (Grad: 19/Undergrad: 127)" Natural Resources Management: 279 (Grad: 50/Undergrad: 229)" Department of Plant & Soil Science: 238 (Grad: 99/Undergrad: 139)" Agricultural Undecided: 15 (Grad: 9/Undergrad: 6)
Historically, CASNR had its largest enrollment in the Fall of 1977 when 1,687 students were enrolled in the college, according to Ramona Johnson, CASNR's Coordinator of Undergraduate Programs.
CASNR's undergraduate enrollment this fall was up 5.2 percent at 1,437, compared with 1,361 last year. The graduate enrollment this fall was up 5.4 percent at 348, compared with 324 last autumn. The graduate enrollment is another record breaker for the college.
A number that CASNR officials are particularly proud is the rise in doctoral students across the college. The total number of CASNR doctoral students this fall was 138, a 22 percent rise from just two years ago when the count was 107. Individually, the doctoral tally was Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics: 24; Department of Agricultural Education & Communications: 26; Animal & Food Sciences: 33; Natural Resources Management: 20; and Department of Plant & Soil Science: 35.
Cindy Akers, CASNR's Director of Student Services added, "Recruitment is a combined effort of our excellent students, alumni, faculty and staff. We're fortunate to have such a strong and active network throughout the state and nation to assist in promoting the college."
Meanwhile, Texas Tech as a whole surpassed previous enrollment records for the second straight year, eclipsing 31,000 students for the first time. Final enrollment for fall 2010 was 31,637 "" an increase of 1,588 from the previous record set last fall.
Tech's previous record of 30,049 last year marked the first time enrollment figures topped the 30,000 mark. The university also set a record this year for freshman enrollment with 4,860, surpassing the previous record of 4,586, also in fall 2009.
According to a university spokesman, there were increases in both undergraduate and graduate enrollment. Graduate enrollment was 5,505 students enrolled, up from 5,176 for the fall 2009 semester. Undergraduate enrollment was 25,462, up from 24,236 in the fall 2009 semester.
"Texas Tech once again is the choice for higher education for a record number of students, and I'm excited about the direction we're headed," said President Guy Bailey.
