NRM plant identification team shines at range management meeting
A three-member plant identification team from Texas Tech University's Department of Natural Resources Management excelled at the Texas Section of the Society for Range Management's annual meeting earlier this month in Odessa, taking third place at the competition.
"We had a great showing at the meetings," said Robert Cox, coach of the team and an assistant professor in Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management.
Representing Texas Tech were Braden Johns, a senior range management major from Lovington, NM; Josh Britt, a senior dual range management and wildlife management major from Wheeler; Chase Taylor, a senior natural resources management major from Hobbs, NM.
The contest had some 15 students from three universities representing Texas. Among the competition's requirements was accurately identifying 50 species of plants native to the West Texas area, as well as correctly categorizing each as to whether it is a native or introduced and annual or perennial.
The Society for Range Management is a professional scientific society and conservation organization concerned with management of rangelands. Established in 1948, the group claims to have more than 4,000 members in 48 countries, including many developing nations. Officials said that its members are concerned with studying, conserving, managing and sustaining the varied resources of the rangelands which comprise nearly half the land in the world.
