Rodeo rolls into Lubbock: Action gets underway at Tech Equestrian Center
Residents of the South Plains are gearing up for a rodeo road trip. Scheduled for Oct. 21-23, the Texas Tech Rodeo will feature top collegiate athletes from 15 Southwestern schools competing in fan favorite events like bareback riding, barrel racing and saddle bronc riding.
Held at the university's indoor equestrian center arena, the competition is the finale of the fall season for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association-Southwest Region's participants.
"This is a great venue and we really appreciate the crowds that come out to watch and the sponsors who make it possible," said Chris Guay, Tech's rodeo coach and member of the animal and food sciences department. "Not only are our fans and sponsors supportive of Tech rodeo, they understand rodeo and just how hard our cowboys and cowgirls work to compete at such a high level."
Among the Red Raider standouts this year are Taylor Langdon, a sophomore from Aubrey. The animal and food science major has led the southwest region's rodeo association barrel racing rankings for most of the season. In the men's competition, senior Luke Creasy, an English major from Alberta, Canada, is the defending southwest regional champion bareback bronc rider. He's had several good outings this season.
"We're coming off a strong season with a number of great performances by our men's and women's teams," Guay said.
Tech's rodeo teams are scheduled to compete in five rodeos during the spring semester. Their goal is to win a regional championship which will qualify them for the College National Finals Rodeo next summer. The top two teams and top three individuals in the region automatically advance to nationals in Casper, Wyoming, he said.
