Texas Tech Meat Judging Team wins again at Omaha's American Royal
Riding a 15-point lead over their closest competition, Texas Tech University's Meat Judging Team extended their winning streak once again taking first place over the weekend at the American Royal Meat Judging Contest in Omaha, Neb. Texas Tech also placed first in the pork judging and reasons divisions.
"This is an extremely deep team," said Mark Miller, the meat judging team coach and Tech's San Antonio Livestock Show Distinguished Chair in Meat Science. "They're constantly pushing one another to make the entire team stronger and better."
Rounding out the top five winners in this year's event were Kansas State University, South Dakota State University, University of Wyoming and Texas A&M University.
In terms of individual achievement, Loni Woolley, a junior animal science student from Grandview, won the contest by 40 points with an individual score of 1,073 points. That score matches the highest ever posted by a Texas Tech meat judging team member, Miller said.
Markus Miller, a Tech junior animal science student from Abernathy, finished third in the overall
competition. Other meat judging team members participating were:
"Mai Lee Holmes, a junior from Katy
"Jessica Kimbro, a senior from Paradise
"KatieRose McCullough, a junior from Castle Rock, Colo.
"Nathan Reeves, a junior from League City
"Troy Tarpley, a junior from Fort Stockton
"Trevor White, a junior from New Home
Separately, Tech's team had three of the top ten individuals in the alternate division. McCullough, Holmes and Tarpley finished first, fourth and eighth overall, respectively.
Saturday's win puts Texas Tech meat judging teams in a rarified atmosphere. They've won 16 of the past 17 national meat judging competitions. The 2008 team won five contests, the 2009 team won six contests and the 2010 team now has five victories under its belt.
The Texas Tech team has one more competition "" the Cargill Meat Solutions High Plains Meat Judging Contest in Plainview "" before the International Contest begins Nov. 14 in Dakota City, Neb.
