Three Tech champions emerge from rodeo competition at Vernon College
Fueled by three championship performances, Texas Tech's rodeo team had a strong outing this weekend at the Vernon College Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo in Wichita Falls. Seniors Luke Creasy and Adam Sawyer, along with sophomore Taylor Langdon, took home individual overall championship honors during the event that drew competitors from across the region.
In bareback bronc riding Creasy, an English major from Alberta, Canada, had the high score of rodeo finals with 80 points, while steer wrestler Sawyer, an agricultural economics major from Bassett, Neb., won first in go round one out of 48 steer wrestlers, second in the finals and first overall.
In barrel racing Langdon, an animal and food sciences major from Aubrey, won first in go round one out of 145 barrel racers. She then blazed the event with the fastest time of the finals with a 16.94 to take first place. That win also put her in first place as the overall barrel racing champion.
Meanwhile, in other barrel racing action:
"Teal Hampton, a senior human sciences major from Ft. Myers, Fla., placed fifth in go round one,
third in the finals and fourth overall.
"Cecily Crouch, a pre-nursing major from Midland, came in seventh in go round one, fourth in the
finals and sixth overall.
"Kirsten Stubbs, a sophomore agriculture economics major from Eldorado, placed eighth in the finals
and finished eighth overall.
In the breakaway roping Dani McGuire, an agricultural economics major from Gardendale, tied for seventh in go round one out of 90 contestants. The Texas Tech senior then placed third in the finals and tied for second overall. Lacey Guthrie, an animal science major from Rigby, Idaho, placed fourth in go round one of breakaway roping, fourth in the finals and fifth overall.
Bailey Guthrie, an animal science major Rigby, Idaho, tied for second in go round one out of 83 goat tiers. The sophomore then placed fifth in the finals and tied for fourth overall in the goat tying competition.
In the men's competition, Clay Creasy, a senior animal and food sciences major from Alberta, Canada, qualified seventh in the saddle bronc riding and finished seventh overall. Klay Kirkes of Carlsbad, NM, tied for fifth coming into the top ten finals of the tie-down calf roping.
Tech's rodeo teams next travel Oct. 14-16 to the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event at West Texas A&M University. Tech's fall season winds down on Oct. 21-23 at Texas Tech Equestrian Center indoor arena.
