Tech Livestock Judging Team wins second at Kansas City's American Royal
A high-scoring senior from Colorado helped lift Texas Tech's Livestock Judging Team to a second place finish behind Oklahoma State Oct. 30 at the American Royal Contest in Kansas City. In addition, Tech won the sheep division and finished second in the reasons and beef divisions at the major competition.
Some 20 teams from across the nation competed in the event, with Texas A&M University, Western Illinois University and Kansas State University rounding out the top five teams. The contest tested contestants' knowledge of cattle, sheep, goats and swine, as well as, their oral reasons. In terms of individual achievement, the Red Raiders were led by second high individual Kirby Carpenter, a senior from Kiowa, Colo., who posted a score of 952 points. Teammate Peyton Wilde, a senior from Wall, finished fifth overall in the competition with a score of 947.

Stormie McClurg, a junior from Nazareth" Chance Neff, a senior from San Angelo" Brandon Reeves, a junior from Mt. Solon, Va." Henry Ruiz, a senior from Eagle Pass" Ben Scott, a senior from Douglas, Ga." Martin Shaw, a senior from Hilmar, Calif.
The team is coached by Ryan Rathmann, an assistant professor in Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences. Also aiding in the coaching effort are Texas Tech graduate student Bryan Bernhard and undergraduate Josh Flohr. Next along the competition trail is the International Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest on Nov. 15 in Louisville.
