Texas Tech takes first at Cargill Judging Contest; National finals in two weeks
Led by a high-scoring junior from Colorado, Texas Tech's Meat Judging Team roasted the competition over the weekend taking first place at the Cargill Meat Solutions' Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Plainview. When the Red Raiders finished the event their closest rival was 130 points behind the powerhouse team from Lubbock.
Texas Tech posted a score of 4,233 points and won every division except one. "The team was extremely consistent in placing classes and excelled in reasons," said Mark Miller, the meat judging team coach and Tech's San Antonio Livestock Show Distinguished Chair in Meat Science.
Some 15 universities from across the nation attended the event with Kansas State University, Fresno State University, Colorado State University and Texas A&M University rounding out the competition's top five.
On an individual level, Tech members took the first, second and third high-individual spots. The leader was KatieRose McCullough from Castle Rock, Colo. The Tech junior pulled down a score of 1,083 points, the highest number ever posted by a Red Raider in national competition, Miller said.
In addition, Loni Woolley, a junior from Grandview, was second high individual at 1,068. She was followed closely by teammate Trevor White, a junior from New Home, who tallied 1,063 points.
Other team members include:
"Mai Lee Holmes, a junior from Katy
"Jessica Kimbro, a senior from Paradise
"Markus Miller, a junior from Abernathy
"Nathan Reeves, a junior from League City
"Troy Tarpley, a junior from Fort Stockton
Separately, the Tech team also had two of the top-ten individuals in the alternate division. Reeves and Holmes finished ninth and tenth overall, respectively.
Sunday's win follows five consecutive victories for the undefeated Texas Tech team. Next on the competitive trail is the international competition on Nov. 14 in Dakota City, Neb. The winner of that event takes home the national title.
