Giddyup; Tech's equestrian center saddles up first Cowboy Christmas Ball
Texas Tech's Ranch Horse Program is hosting its first Cowboy Christmas Ball at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center. Those attending the gala will enjoy a barbecue dinner, silent auction and live music by Desert Pearl, and Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys.
Tedd Mitchell, president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, will open the ceremony. The event is intended to be an annual celebration to raise awareness and funds, which will entirely benefit the equestrian center and the service and educational programs it houses.
The equestrian center was donated in 2004 by Curtis and Sue Griffith, and many people aren't aware of its existence, said Kim Guay, director of the Texas Tech Equestrian Center
"In the six years the center has been owned by Texas Tech we always intended to have a gala type of event," Guay said. "Now we are, and we want to raise proceeds that will help with barn maintenance, grounds maintenance and much more. We want to provide a quality place for all our programs to call home."
The equestrian center houses Tech's award-winning ranch horse program which encompasses the horse judging team, the ranch horse team, the therapeutic riding club, the equestrian team and the rodeo team. Throughout the year the center holds many events such as team roping, barrel races and clinics as well as classes during the week in different types of equine related subjects.
Individual tickets for the Cowboy Christmas Ball are $40 a person, $75 a couple. Sponsor tables are available and silent auction donations are welcome, officials said.
