The Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Gerald W. Thomas Outstanding Agriculturalist Award has recognized leading figures who have made significant contributions to West Texas agricultural production since 1969. The award is given to individuals in three different categories: Production, Agribusiness and Public Service.
The Outstanding Agriculturalist Award recognizes trailblazers and pioneers who have advanced and advocated for the agricultural industry. Recipients are nominated by their peers from across the agricultural sector.
Established in 1969, the Gerald W. Thomas Outstanding Agriculturalist Award recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on the agricultural industry through their achievements and leadership.
The Outstanding Agriculturalist Award recognizes trailblazers and pioneers who have advanced and advocated for the agricultural industry. Recipients are nominated by their peers from across the agricultural sector. These distinguished honorees also serve as examples for the next generation of American agriculturalists.
Nominees are not required to be Davis College or Texas Tech alumni, reflecting the award's emphasis on recognizing excellence throughout the broader agricultural community.
Looking back over the past two decades, some notable past honorees include Gail Kring, former President and CEO of the PYCO Industries, Inc., and Ross Wilson, former President and CEO of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.
Kring, who received the award in the Agribusiness category in 2016, was recognized for his work advancing and advocating for the expansion of cotton production across the South Plains.
Wilson, who received the award in the Agribusiness category in 2006, was recognized as a leading voice for the expansion of the beef cattle industry across the Texas Panhandle and West Texas.
These leaders are just a few of the stories that have been recognized as top advocates for agriculture in West Texas and beyond.
The college is currently accepting nominations for this prestigious award. Nominations are open through July 1, 2026, and recipients will be recognized at the 99th Annual Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Pig Roast.
