Texas Tech’s summer commencement ceremonies Aug. 7-8 marked the end of years of study for 2,101 graduates, including 95 undergraduates from the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.
The ceremonies, held at United Supermarkets Arena, brought together the largest summer graduating class in university history: 1,255 undergraduate students and 846 graduate students.

The class represented 45 states and 40 countries. Graduates ranged in age from 19 to 70.
For Davis College, the undergraduate graduates represented the breadth of programs spanning agriculture, natural resources and environmental science; fields that remain central to the university’s academic mission and to the region’s economy.
During the ceremonies, students selected to represent their colleges carried ceremonial banners. Ella Sue Wood, a senior agricultural education major from Canyon Lake, Texas, carried the Davis College banner. Joisalyn Tarno, a senior natural resources management major from Quitman, Texas, carried the Honors College banner, according to Megan Biggs, Davis College’s program manager for Academic Student Programs.
Colter Wayne Pohlman, an agricultural and applied economics dual major with the Rawls College of Business from Hereford, Texas, graduated with the highest grade-point average among Davis College students.
The Davis College graduates represented six departments and nine majors. Undergraduate degrees were conferred in the following programs:
- Agricultural & Applied Economics: 21
- Agricultural Education & Communications: 12
- Animal & Food Science: 40
- Landscape Architecture: 1
- Natural Resources Management: 16
- Plant & Soil Science: 5
As the graduates begin their careers or continue their education, Davis College officials noted that they are entering agricultural and natural resources industries undergoing rapid change, driven by evolving technologies, environmental pressures and growing demands for food, water and other natural resources. Their education in Davis College has prepared them to contribute to those challenges.
