Faculty Research - Summer 2017

Assistant Professor of Sculpture Cody Arnall and partner Lindsey Maestri are having a two-person show, Are You Listening to Me?, presented at the University of Texas San Antonio, Terminal 136 Gallery, San Antonio, July 6th-22nd.


Associate Professor of Art History Kevin Chua, Ph.D received a Dean's Advancing Creative Scholarship Award to support initial travel and research on the 19th-century Filipino artist Juan Luna. The project will begin as an essay and will be combined with other essays into a projected book on Southeast Asian modernism.

Associate Professor of Painting/Drawing and Coordinator of Art Foundations Carol Flueckiger spent the month of June at Elsewhere Studios Residency in Paonia, CO. She worked on illustrations for the 19th-century civil rights speech "Solitude of Self." While in residence, she conducted Solar Powered Painting workshops with groups of participants from Solar Energy International, High Country News and Citizens for a Healthy Environment.


Assistant Professor Ghislaine Fremaux's large-scale drawing, Abaft, was accepted into the 19th Annual Works on Paper exhibition at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, juried by Jane Panetta (Associate Curator of Drawing, Whitney Museum of American Art), in Loveladies, NJ, June 2 – June 26, 2017.

Fremaux's work, Agito [Conor], was accepted into The Next Big Thing 2017, juried by Tish Greenwood (Executive Director, California Museum of Art, Thousand Oaks), at Studio Channel Islands in Caramillo, CA, May 18 – June 24, 2017.

Additionally, Fremaux's exhibition, Skin of Years: Nudism and the Aging Body, which presented the body of artwork yielded from its titular interdisciplinary, TTU-funded project, was presented at the School of Art Satellite Gallery through June 2 - 25, 2017. A panel discussion, sponsored by Landmark Arts, was held on June 15th, to an audience of fifty.

Professor of Photography Robin Germany received a Dean's Advancing Creative Scholarship Award to support her participation in the workshop "Concepts in Book Art" at the Penland School of Crafts, NC, during the summer of 2017. She plans to develop a body of work that initiates dialogues among large-scale photography, intimately scaled books, nature, and the body.

Assistant Professor of Transmedia Jiawei Gong conducted a Documentary Photography Workshop and delivered a public lecture in the School of Art & Design at Zhejiang University of Science & Technology in Hangzhou, China in May 2017. He also delivered two lectures, titled "A Transmedia Approach in Art & Design Practice," and "Visual Storytelling in Video Art," at Zhejiang University of Media and Communications in Hangzhou, China. In June 2017, Gong received a Dean's Advancing Creative Scholarship Award to support his research project "Bridging the Gap Between Traditional and New Media". Funds will support purchase of equipment and supplies, travel, and participation in the Digital Arts Seminar conducted by Bonnie Pierce Lhotka in Denver, CO during the summer of 2017. 

Associate Professor of Art History Jorgelina Orfila received a Dean's Advancing Creative Scholarship Award to assist with travel expenses to support her project entitled "A Multifaceted Transdisciplinary Endeavor on Animation & Fine Arts." Archival research will serve as the foundation for a book-length project. The new research that impacts studies in animation will be conjoined with scholarship on modern fine art.

Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts Heather Warren-Crow created an experimental audio tour for the Museum of Performance + Design in San Francisco (June 2017) and presented a live audio performance in Taipei, Taiwan as part of the World Stage Design international exhibition (July 2017).

Associate Professor in Art Foundations/Printmaking Sang Mi Yoo has been awarded a Denbo Fellowship in support of her artist residency and print project, Dazzle Dazzle, in June-July 2017 at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, MD. She was invited into a group exhibition, Control within Chaos, that took place between June 7-30 at the Seacourt Print Workshop in Bangor, Northern Ireland. She also received a Dean's Advancing Creative Scholarship Award to support her travel and print production for an upcoming solo exhibition.
