These figures show two different runs of a simulation in which each allele in a given generation is derived from a randomly chosen allele in the previous generation. The lines indicate which alleles are derived from which.

On the left is the raw output. On the right is the result of untangling the lineages by rearranging the descendant alleles but leaving the connections the same.

Note that in each case one allele becomes the common ancestor of all alleles in the future, but this is a different lucky allele in the two runs.
