Office of Institutional Diversity

The Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) falls under the purview of the Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President Dr. Carol A. Sumner. OID promotes cross-cultural awareness through educational collaborations with faculty and staff to train students for ethical leadership for a diverse and globally competitive workforce. The OID also collaborates with communities throughout West Texas to foster inclusive and sustainable relationships that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Mission
The Office of Institutional Diversity is committed to creating a culture of inclusiveness, diversity, and equity with the oversight of university-wide diversity efforts involving faculty and staff. Priorities of the OID include working extensively with faculty on creating opportunities to recruit, hire, and retain a diverse faculty and promoting diversity in scholarly activities and research.
Another priority focuses on staff development in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the institution, with the new initiative L.E.A.D. Fellows program that engages leaders in advancing diversity in the various colleges. In addition, OID is also responsible for responding to diversity surveys regarding demographic data on TTU students, faculty, and staff, as well as university and system leadership.
To that end, OID also keeps up-to-date demographic information, including gender and ethnicity, of TTU students, faculty, and staff, as well as historical trends and data. This information is crucial to understanding recruitment and hiring trends and devising strategies for a more diverse and inclusive student body, staff, and faculty.
OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL DIVERSITY AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS
On Wednesday, June 22, the TTU Office of Institutional Diversity awarded 20 scholarships to Texas Tech students for their efforts promoting and supporting diversity on campus. Fifteen students received a $1,000 Diversity Success Scholarship, four students received a $500 Multicultural Faculty and Staff Association Endowed Scholarship, and one student received the $500 Bidal Aguero scholarship. Scholarship applicants were judged on leadership, community service, academic achievement, and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion on the TTU campus.
Funding diversity scholarships for students is one of the many duties of the Office of Institutional Diversity, which also include hosting faculty search committee training and workshops, funding faculty research, sponsoring various events including HSI Week and the annual Celebrate Diversity Banquet, and generally serving as a resource for faculty and staff diversity initiatives.
