Coronavirus Update from Dean Mendez about Teacher Candidate Field Placements: March 19, 2020

Dear District Partners,

We are reaching out today to thank you for your brave leadership during these difficult, and unprecedented circumstances. On behalf of the Texas Tech University College of Education, we applaud you for prioritizing learning and balancing safety at this difficult time for education leaders.

I am specifically writing today to deliver important information that affects our teacher candidates in the TechTeach program who are placed in your district. In order to comply with the directives from our Texas Tech University leadership, we have made the decision to not require our teacher candidates to return to their student teaching placement effective immediately. State requirements for teacher certification placement have been met for all of our TechTeach candidates, and after successful completion of remaining course assignments, these candidates will be eligible for teacher certification and hiring in your district.

Our Texas Tech Site Coordinators will communicate directly with campus administration and mentor teachers so that they can plan accordingly. We will encourage our TechTeach teacher candidates to reach out to their assigned mentor teachers and add any support possible. However, we do not want to cause a disruption to your strategic preparation for these extraordinary circumstances. Therefore, a candidate who reaches out should be a support and not a hindrance.

Texas Tech University College of Education truly values your partnership. We are committed to continuing to provide high quality teacher candidates to support the learning of students in your districts. Please let me know if you have any questions.

In gratitude of our partnership,

Dr. Jesse Perez Mendez
Dean College of Education
