Deaf and Hard of Hearing Certification Preparation Program

The coursework for an online Deaf and Hard of Hearing Graduate Certification Preparation Program is available both as a stand-alone certificate or an area of emphasis with the Masters of Education in Special Education. The degree plan includes all curriculum required for the Texas State Board of Education Certification Deaf and Hard of Hearing EC-12 Teaching Certificate. Certification also requires a passing score on the TExES examination and a Masters Degree.

  • Certificate programs can be pursued independently or concurrently with a master's program.
  • Most courses are offered online; however, some courses are only offered face-to-face in Lubbock.
  • Prerequisite: bachelor's degree
  • Completion time varies. Students may take up to three classes each semester and two each summer session, making completion time vary by individual.
  • Semester-based courses align with the Academic Calendar of Texas Tech University. New students may enroll at the beginning of any one of the four semesters throughout the year.

Application Process

Although there is no application deadline, potential students are encouraged to submit all application materials at least two months prior to projected initial enrollment. Learn more.

  1. Complete the Apply Texas application.
    • When you are asked to select your major, choose "Education - Teaching Certificate in College of Education" even if you already have your teacher's certification. Note: If you are wanting to pursue your master’s degree along with the certification preparation coursework, you will select "Master’s in Special Education" as your major.
    • On question 4 ("Enter any specific area of interest or specialty within your proposed major"), please select "Hearing Impairment (Online)" from the drop-down menu.
    • $60 initial application fee or $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program requests, or readmission requests).
  2. Complete additional admissions requirements as outlined by the Texas Tech University Graduate School.
    • Applicants must have unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended sent to Texas Tech University Graduate School at graduate.admissions@ttu.edu. If you are admitted, you will then be required to submit official transcripts.
    • All international applicants must provide proof of English proficiency before their applications can be considered for admission. A list of acceptable exams can be found on the Graduate School International Prospective Student webpage. This test is waived only for graduates of U.S. universities or universities in English proficiency-exempt countries. Applicants who have completed at least two consecutive years at a college or university in the U.S. or in an English proficiency-exempt country, are also exempt from the English proficiency requirement.
  3. Check the Applications tab in your Raiderlink for notification of a change in your admissions status.
  4. If you plan to pursue a Master of Education in Special Education, emphasis in Deaf and Hard of Hearing, apply to Texas Tech University's College of Education. Applicants who are interested only in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Certification Preparation program do not need to complete a College of Education application.
  5. If you receive notification of rejection, you may contact the Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Research, (806) 742-1998, ext. 436, for advisement regarding the admissions appeals process.

Interested in taking only one or two courses? Use Texas Tech University's Graduate Temporary Status to apply and take as many as 12 credit hours without completing the application process to a degree program.
