Texas Tech Holds Official Signing for Texan to Red Raider Program with South Plains College

By Stacy Gumula, Project Manager

On April 1, Texas Tech University and South Plains College held an official signing at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center on the Texas Tech campus. The signing included President Lawrence Schovanec and Provost Michael Galyean from TTU, and President Robin Satterwhite and Vice President Ryan Gibbs from SPC.

"This partnership is distinguished by the long-standing relationship between Texas Tech and South Plains College and our close proximity," Schovanec said. "This provides special pathways for students who start at SPC with the ultimate goal of enrolling at Texas Tech."

With so many students in the community pursuing higher education at multiple levels, it is important for these two institutions to continue working together to ease the transfer process. Texas Tech and South Plains College have already developed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), programs, and articulation agreements to grow this partnership. This specific program aids students who do not meet admission requirements for Texas Tech when applying. The two institutions have worked to help those students still attend Texas Tech once they have completed the program.

"South Plains College's partnership with Texas Tech is integral to meeting the educational needs of many of our transfer students," Satterwhite said.

Students will complete 12-15 hours at TTU and 39-42 hours simultaneously at SPC as well as the RaiderReady program offered by Texas Tech University. RaiderReady is a seminar-style course specifically designed to help transfer students with the transition to a four-year institution.

Once all requirements have been met, the student will have guaranteed admission not only to Texas Tech, but also to the specific college and degree program, so long as other admission requirements are met upon program completion. In addition, students will receive the same privileges for the Texas Tech campus as they would if they were not part of this program. This means athletics privileges, access to the library, student rec center and more.

"This agreement will provide an additional pathway for students to enroll in and graduate from Texas Tech, which increases the access to a high-quality education," said Melanie Hart, vice provost for eLearning & Academic Partnerships in Texas Tech's Office of the Provost. This program is a great opportunity to further provide access to a high-quality education from Texas Tech for all students who wish to pursue their degree in Lubbock."
