Forging Futures Classic Golf Tournament Drives Community Growth in Fredericksburg

By Trevor Hendricks, eLearning Marketing Student Assistant

Using their Hill Country location to their advantage, the Forging Futures Coalition (FFC) took to the beautiful landscapes of Fredericksburg to host the Forging Futures Classic Charity Golf Tournament. The FFC's members include Texas Tech University at Fredericksburg, The Hill Country University Center (HCUC), Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI,) Central Texas College (CTC) and the Texas Tech Alumni Association. The two-day event sponsored by Alstadt Brewery, consists of a Tee-Off Dinner, Golf Tournament and cocktail mixer established to raise funds for local student scholarships and the betterment of the Fredericksburg community.

The FFC Tee-Off dinner on April 22 went well. Located at the scenic Texas Ranger Heritage Center Pavilion, 120 guests enjoyed mingling with friends old and new. Also in attendance was special guest Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec. During a speech, Dr. Schovanec "expressed his commitment to the Fredericksburg community and is looking to develop new programs," according to Texas Tech University at Fredericksburg and Highland Lakes Director Kelly Fox. After dining, guests were invited to participate in a live auction to win prizes and help raise scholarship funds.

On April 23, golf teams rallied at the prestigious Boot Ranch Golf Course to play their long-anticipated 18-hole round of golf. The 50 players teed off to perfect weather conditions and had the chance to play with special guest Texas Tech University System Chancellor Robert Duncan. Duncan and his team shot 78, falling just short to the team with a winning score of 73, two above par score of 71.

After completing the friendly competition, the golfers regrouped with their guests at the Boot Ranch Clubhouse for a cocktail reception to conclude the FCC event.

In total, the FFC tournament, sponsorships and auction raised around $135,000. The FCC Charity Golf Tournament event has been one of Texas Tech at Fredericksburg's most successful events of the year and we look forward to seeing how the event succeeds in years to come.
