The Bachelor of Arts in English offers a comprehensive education in literature, language, and writing, preparing you for a wide range of careers in today's competitive job market. The English department offers the BA in English in a variety of modalities: Fully onsite, hybrid (with a mixture of onsite and online synchronous and asynchronous courses), and fully online (with fully asynchronous courses). Students taking upper-division English courses have the opportunity to work closely with the department's nearly 60 full-time faculty, whose research and teaching range from literatures of the Global South to Medieval literature, from African American literature to contemporary film studies, from Latinx American Literature to Shakespeare, from linguistics to memoir, and more.

Students majoring in English can select one of three concentrations in the degree program:

  • Literature and Langauge: study literary works from a wide variety of periods and genres
  • Creative Writing: write fiction, nonfiction, and/or poetry with the guidance of teachers who write
  • English Teaching: prepares students for future English language arts teacher certification at the secondary level by meeting the English coursework requirements for certification

The English department also offers a flexible Minor in English, as well as other minors that pair well with the English BA.

Students with an English major might also consider a Writing Certificate, which only requires a few more classes on top of the English degree.
