Application Procedures

Applicants must gain admission to both the Graduate School at Texas Tech University and the Ph.D. program of study in either the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics or the Department of Political Science. Applicants can submit the required FMI Ph.D. fellowship application materials (see below) at any time, but will receive an official decision only after an admissions decision has been rendered.

(Note: The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics is in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources)

Required materials for both Graduate School program applications:

• Official transcript(s) for all post-secondary education;

• Official copy of GRE scores (temporarily waived due to COVID-19);

• Three (3) letters of recommendation: the FMI will receive these letters, please ask your referees to also discuss how you will be a good fit for the Ph.D. fellowship;

• Statement of purpose;

• Writing sample;

• Official copy of English proficiency test scores from TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, PTE Academic, Cambridge CPE, or Cambridge CAE (international students only – see Graduate School website for details);

• Copy of passport bio page (international students only).

FMI Ph.D. Fellowship Application

Applicants for the FMI Ph.D. Fellowship should have strong academic backgrounds that have prepared them for success in a doctoral program and a demonstrated interest in fields including, but not necessarily limited to, Austrian economics, Public Choice, and New Institutional economics.

To apply and receive consideration for a fellowship, an applicant should send the following materials to the Free Market Institute (please email all materials in PDF format to free.market@ttu.edu):

Required materials

• Current resume/CV;

• Statement of interest that outlines research goals and interest in the Institute's mission (1,500 word maximum);

• Writing sample, preferably a paper that addresses an issue related to the Institute's research mission;

• Unofficial copy of undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts; and

• Unofficial copy of most recent GRE scores. (Though not currently required for TTU Graduate School Programs applications, GRE scores are considered for FMI Fellowship applications.)

Applications are now open for the 2024-2025 academic year. Priority application deadline: Thursday, February 1, 2024.
