Monetary and Fiscal Policy — Spring 2023

The theme for the spring 2023 Political Economy Reading Program was Monetary and Fiscal Policy. Participants explored debates about the stability of market economies, the government's role in recessions and depressions, and the tension between democracy and technocracy.

Is capitalism inherently crisis prone? What, if anything, can governments do to prevent business cycles? Should economic experts be subject to democratic oversight and constitutional constraints? Participants received a set of readings that provided a foundation for the discussions to address the above questions, among other questions of importance to the program theme.

Participants also attended a summit hosted at Texas Tech University with program participants from Angelo State University, on February 17-18, 2023. The summit featured formal remarks from Lawrence H. White, Professor of Economics at George Mason University, who's work was included in the program reading materials. Participants engaged in interactive discussion groups on issues related to the program theme.
