Summary

This layer contains the wind resource potential within the contiguous US. This polygon file is intended for small scale thematic mapping.

Description

            

The spatial data were obtained from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The layer represents the average annual wind speed at 50 meters and the power potential of the wind. The attributes were modified to include wind power class. The coordinate system of this data is WGS 1984.

Supplemental Information
                            This data set has been validated by NREL and wind energy meteorological consultants.  However, the data is not suitable for micro-siting potential development projects.  This shapefile was generated from a raster dataset with a 200 m resolution, in a UTM zone 15N, datum WGS 84 projection system.

Wind power class is an indicator of likely resource strength, with a higher wind power class representing higher wind resource levels.  The following classification information is for utility-scale applications at a 50 meter height.

                        This GIS data was developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory ("NREL"), which is operated by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy ("DOE"). The user is granted the right, without any fee or cost, to use, copy, modify, alter, enhance and distribute this data for any purpose whatsoever, provided that this entire notice appears in all copies of the data. Further, the user of this data agrees to credit NREL in any publications or software that incorporate or use the data.
