World, Glaciers
This layer contains glaciated areas around the world. This polygon file is intended for large scale thematic mapping and analysis.
The spatial data were obtained from the Natural Earth website. The data orginiated from the Digital Chart of the World (DCW) and include regions where alpine glaciers, ice sheets, ice shelves, tidewater glaciers, and polar glaciers are commonly found.* The data are suitable for making relatively detailed maps of countries and regions and are intended for use at a scale no larger than 1:10,000,000. Attributes were modified to include recnum ID, scalerank, type, and name. The coordinate system of this data is WGS 1984.
*The original DCW data was collected decades ago. Since then many mountain glaciers have either disappeared or diminished in size. This data theme is deliberately called “glaciated areas” instead of “glaciers” to reflect the changeable character of glacier extents
